Water-Resistant Backpack VS. Waterproof Backpack for Hiking
We all know that we need to keep ourselves prepared for anything when it comes to Mother Nature. Water-resistant backpacks are a great way to be ready for the rain, and they also come in handy if you’re storing electronics or other items that could get water damaged. A waterproof backpack will protect your belongings from any water, but they can’t handle as much abuse as their water-resistant counterparts. Which one should you choose?
What is a waterproof backpack?
Waterproof backpacks are designed to keep the contents dry from any water. Waterproof materials can be made out of various types, including plastic or vinyl that is similar to raincoats and other wet weather gear.
Not all waterproof bags are created equal: Water-resistant materials can be tested by simply applying pressure with a wet finger to the bag‚ material and checking if water seeps through or not. Water Resistance depends on the Denier measurement of the fabric, which can range between 900D (heavy duty) to 40D (lightweight). A denier is the measure of the linear density of any given fabric. The higher the denier number, the thicker/more resistant the fabric will be against water penetration; however, it also increases weight and reduces breathability. Therefore, a balance must be struck when considering how durable your bag should be – depending on its intended use – while keeping in mind other factors like comfort, ventilation, and size. You can learn more about this here
Water-resistant backpacks have been treated with a protective layer that helps repel liquids such as water and grease but may not protect your belongings if they’re submerged in it for an extended time.
Are most backpacks water-resistant?
Most backpacks are made from a water-resistant material to help protect your belongings, but few are truly waterproof. Waterproof backpacks offer more protection from the elements and usually have some lining that isn’t found in cheaper or less durable models.
How do I know if my backpack is water-resistant?
You will know if your backpack is water-resistant by looking at the product description or reviewing its specifications. Waterproof backpacks are usually more expensive and generally made of a higher quality fabric that is puncture-resistant, tear-proof, and can withstand heavy weights without tearing.
What materials make up most water-resistant backpacks?
The majority of high-performance water-resistant backpacks on the market today combine different types of fabrics and often use them in combination with an inner (and sometimes outer) coating to create a durable backpack that will repel liquids such as rainwater for some time.
How do I protect my backpack from rain?
It is essential to select a material that will keep out the rain to protect your backpack from rain, such as nylon. Water-resistant backpacks often come with zippers that can seal every pocket to protect the contents from moisture.
Will all fabrics protect my bag in a heavy downpour?
No, not necessarily: while some water-resistant materials may offer you enough resistance to stay dry in drizzle and misty conditions (some even after several months), they do eventually wear off or rip if subjected to strong winds or excessive amounts of weight or pressure over time.
How do I keep my backpack dry while hiking?
You can keep your backpack dry while hiking by investing in a rain cover for your pack. Rain covers are outer covers that can quickly be used to cover the backpack. Andean Blue Wanderer Backpacks come equipped with a built-in rain cover in a lower pocket that will help you keep your gear dry.
Do I need a waterproof or water-resistant bag?
Water-resistant bags are lighter, more affordable and can resist light rain and moisture but, unless you have a rain cover that fits well, won’t keep your belongings completely dry in the event of heavy rain, strong winds, or when you drop them into puddles! Waterproof backpacks are made with materials that protect against all types of wet conditions, including showers and even submersion, for short periods of time (30 minutes). But they are heavier, more expensive and less flexible.
A good backpack for hiking and camping should be lightweight and durable. Water-resistant backpacks are recommended because they can help protect your
belongings from getting wet in a drizzle or snowstorm, but the protection won’t last without a rain cover if it’s pouring down rain for hours on end. Waterproof hiking backpacks will keep all of your gear dry when you plan to hike in heavy rain, snow, sleet, or hail storms.
Things to consider when buying a hiking backpack:
– Water-resistant vs. waterproof hiking backpacks
– Waterproofing materials used in water-resistant backpacks
– Durability of the backpack fabric and zippers
– Hiking style, length of hikes, distance from car to trailhead or basecamp.
There are several different types of fabrics being used for pack construction. For many years nylon was the standard, but now you can find packs made with lightweight polyester/nylon blends and super strong denier ripstop Cordura nylon that is completely weatherproof. Most modern-day packs include an internal frame that helps distribute weight evenly across your hips and shoulders while also supporting heavier loads over longer distances without any strain on important muscles like those around your back and neck.
So, do you need a water-resistant backpack or waterproof for hiking? The answer to that question is simple: If you are going on an actual hike where there will be rain and potentially snow, then yes. But if your hikes are more casual in nature with the occasional rain shower here and there, no need to go out looking at all these heavy-duty packs. Very happy with my backpack. I love the colors and threaded design. Everybody always has the same stuff on the trails so it’s nice to have something fresh and stylish. Lots of space for all the items you would need for a quick or long day hike. Many pockets to use, I filled the large pockets with food, extra clothing, the medium size pocket with my wallet, keys, and the smaller pocket with quick to get to snacks and emergency stuff. Used the smaller hip pockets for tissue, sanitizer and pocket knife. I like that the side water bottle pockets are large enough to fit some very large water bottles and if that’s not enough there is a specific pocket for your water bladder. My 3 liter bladder was a tight fit, but should be ideal for a 1-2 liter. My wife loved it too, so much that she claimed it for herself on our next hike.

Took it out for its first hike and all I had to do as adjust some straps. Ten miles of moderate terrain and it fit just fine.
